Dr Campbell finds he has lung cancer, preventing him from enlisting. His wife, who had been wishing for something to keep him out of the armed services, is horrified. When the WI is reformed by Frances Barden , she makes the committee less exclusive and more egalitarian; she is later voted as the official President. Meanwhile, Pat , a member of the committee, is being abused by her husband Bob, upon whom she is forced to wait hand and foot.
The suspicion of an affair is confirmed when Frances receives the possessions her husband was carrying upon his death and finds a necklace and card meant for Helen. Home Fires fans flocked to RadioTimes.com in the wake of the news of the show's cancellation, with 98% of fans voting against the decision in our poll. Just last week, the drama won a second poll of axed shows the deserved to be brought back, pulling in an impressive 5,000 votes.

Series two of Home Fire concluded on Sunday night, unfortunately clashing with BBC1's Bafta TV Awards coverage. Spencer is drafted but registers as a conscientious objector. His friends and neighbors almost unilaterally begin to vilify and torment him. A mob gathers and coats his bicycle, which he uses to deliver the post, with blood and chicken feathers. With the villagers shunning him, Claire worries for him.
It seems very possible that My Mother And Other Strangers will stay a one-season miniseries, and fans will just have to be satisfied with the way the first season comes to an end. Fortunately, World War II continues to provide the backdrop for dramas and documentaries, so you can delve into that history elsewhere. Set at the onset of WWII, Home Fires is inspired by the real organization The Women’s Institute , a women’s social club that is still alive and well.
